SLED Charges Richland County Man Following Shooting at S.C. State

The South Carolina Law Enforcement Division (SLED) charged Matthew Daniel McCoy, 18, with Pointing and Presenting a Firearm at a Person, and Carrying a Weapon on School Property on Sunday, October 5, 2025. The SLED investigation was requested by the South Carolina State University Department of Public Safety.
Details can be found in the attached warrants.
McCoy was booked into the Orangeburg County Detention Center.
The case will be prosecuted by the 1st Circuit Solicitor’s Office.
SLED is investigating two shootings at S.C. State. Both shootings occurred in the evening on Saturday, October 4, 2025. A woman was killed in one of the shootings. Information regarding her identity will come from the Orangeburg County Coroner’s Office.
A man was injured in the second shooting, and he is currently in the hospital.
