The South Carolina Law Enforcement Division (SLED) is investigating an officer involved shooting that occurred on Sunday, October 18, 2026, in Chester County.
Chester County Sheriff’s Office deputies responded to Cushman Drive, in Chester, SC, early Sunday morning to assist the Chester Police Department with a large crowd that was creating a disturbance. When deputies arrived, there was another disturbance outside along Cushman Drive and Frazier Drive. As Chester County deputies were speaking with individuals involved with the disturbance, there was a gunshot. SLED and local law enforcement continue to investigate the initial shooting and can confirm that no evidence at this time indicates the shot came from a law enforcement officer. One man was found to have a gunshot wound. The injured man was taken to the hospital, where he remains for treatment. As Chester County deputies responded to the injured man, another man ran away from deputies. During a chase between the fleeing man and deputies, a Chester County deputy fired. The man was not shot. He was apprehended and taken into custody without injury. No law enforcement officers were injured. SLED was requested to investigate by the Chester County Sheriff’s Office.
This is an ongoing investigation. As such, no other information about the case will be disclosed by SLED at this time.
SLED conducts law enforcement officer involved shooting (OIS) investigations at the request of the agency involved in the incident or the agency with jurisdiction. When requested to investigate an OIS, SLED’s goal is to conduct a thorough, independent criminal investigation as timely as is possible under the circumstances. SLED agents will conduct interviews with all potential witnesses in this matter. Further, SLED will collect all relevant evidence and will forensically test such evidence as needed. Information gathered in the SLED investigation of the incident will be summarized in a case file report to be submitted to prosecutors.
