SLED charges Chesterfield County man Following Domestic Incident, Officer Involved Shooting, and Standoff

The South Carolina Law Enforcement Division (SLED) is investigating a series of incidents, including an officer involved shooting, that began Wednesday, August 21, 2024, and continued overnight into Thursday, August 22, 2024, in Chesterfield County.
Chesterfield County Sheriff’s Office received a call for service on Wednesday regarding a domestic disturbance in the parking lot of a fitness center. CCSO requested Pageland Police Department (PPD) officers who were nearby respond to the scene until CCSO deputies could get there. PPD officers encountered an armed man, Kenneth Bragg, 37. Bragg fired shots at them and drove away. CCSO located Bragg a short time later, which led to an exchange of gunfire and a vehicle chase. CCSO requested SLED to assist. A SLED helicopter responded to the area. Bragg fired shots at the SLED helicopter. Bragg barricaded himself inside a home on Salebarn Lane. Following an overnight standoff and negotiations, Bragg was taken into custody Thursday morning. Braggfired shots throughout the incident. No one was injured. Bragg damaged two SLED drones and two SLED robots utilized during the standoff.
SLED was requested to investigate by the Chesterfield County Sheriff’s Office and the Pageland Police Department. SLED charged Bragg on Friday, August 23, 2024, with 29 offenses. Details can be found in the attached arrest warrants.
This is an ongoing investigation. As such, no other information about the case will be disclosed by SLED at this time.
SLED conducts law enforcement officer involved shooting (OIS) investigations at the request of the agency involved in the incident or the agency with jurisdiction. When requested to investigate an OIS, SLED’s goal is to conduct a thorough, independent criminal investigation as timely as is possible under the circumstances. SLED agents will conduct interviews with all potential witnesses in this matter. Further, SLED will collect all relevant evidence and will forensically test such evidence as needed. Information gathered in the SLED investigation of the incident will be summarized in a case file report to be submitted to prosecutors.
The incident in Chesterfield County was the 31st officer involved shooting in South Carolina in 2024. This is the 1st officer involved shooting for the Chesterfield County Sheriff’s Office this year. In 2023, there were 43 officer involved shootings in South Carolina. The Chesterfield County Sheriff’s Office had no officer involved shootings last year.
