SLED Charges South Carolina State Elections Commission Former Executive Director and Former Deputy Director

The South Carolina Law Enforcement Division (SLED) arrested Howard Matthew Knapp, 40, and Margaret Paige Salonich, 41, on Friday, October 24, 2025.
SLED charged former Executive Director Knapp with Accessory After the Fact, Misconduct in Office, Embezzlement of Public Funds, Value Less Than $10,000, and 8 counts of Use of Official Position or Office for Financial Gain.
SLED charged former Deputy Director Salonich with Wiretapping.
The SLED investigation was requested by the South Carolina Attorney General’s Office. SLED’s investigation is active and ongoing.

Knapp and Salonich were booked into the Alvin S. Glenn Detention Center in Richland County.
The case will be prosecuted by the South Carolina Attorney General’s Office.
