Thursday, Dec 4, 2025

SLED hosted a free, three-day K9 Decoy Workshop this week for law enforcement agencies across South Carolina.  A total of 35 K9 teams from 19 local, county, and state agencies attended the workshop.
Training with a decoy is an important part of K9 team training. The handler became the ‘decoy,’ also known as the ‘agitator,’ and partnered with their dog to learn skills that will help them both prepare for possible real-world situations.

Senior Special Agent Doug Wannemacher instructed the course with the assistance of Sgt. Jeff Thom from the Charleston Police Department, Investigator Michael Mejia from the Greenwood County Sheriff’s Office, SLED Special Agent Richard Hunton III, and SLED Special Agent Cole Powell.

SLED, Aiken County Sheriff’s Office, Berkeley County Sheriff’s Office, Charleston Police Department, Columbia Police Department, Fairfield County Sheriff’s Office, Greenville County Sheriff’s Office, Greenville Police Department, Hardeeville Police Department, Lexington County Sheriff’s Department, Mauldin Police Department, Myrtle Beach Police Department, North Charleston Police Department, Orangeburg County Sheriff’s Office, Richland County Sheriff’s Department, Rock Hill Police Department, South Carolina Department of Juvenile Justice, Spartanburg Police Department, and Greenwood County Sheriff’s Office all participated in the workshop, which was held at the South Carolina Center for School Safety in Gilbert.
