The South Carolina Law Enforcement Division (SLED) is investigating an officer involved shooting that occurred on Friday, May 30, 2025, in Calhoun County. The Calhoun County Sheriff’s Office requested the SLED investigation.

A Calhoun County Sheriff’s deputy responded to a 911 call regarding a suspicious person and encountered a man lying on the side of the road who matched the description. As the deputy approached, the armed man shot at the deputy and ran away. The shot struck the deputy’s patrol vehicle. The deputy was not injured. The Calhoun County Sheriff’s Office K9 unit was notified and responded to the scene. The K9 tracked and located the man near the woods. During an exchange of gunfire, the K9 and the man were both shot. The man was taken to the hospital and remains there for treatment at this time. The K9 was treated for gunshot wounds and is now home recovering.

This is an ongoing investigation. As such, no other information about the case will be disclosed by SLED at this time.

SLED conducts law enforcement officer involved shooting (OIS) investigations at the request of the agency involved in the incident or the agency with jurisdiction. When requested to investigate an OIS, SLED’s goal is to conduct a thorough, independent criminal investigation as timely as is possible under the circumstances. SLED agents will conduct interviews with all potential witnesses in this matter. Further, SLED will collect all relevant evidence and will forensically test such evidence as needed. Information gathered in the SLED investigation of the incident will be summarized in a case file report to be submitted to prosecutors.

The incident in Calhoun County is the 23rd officer involved shooting in South Carolina in 2025.

This is the 1st officer involved shooting for the Calhoun County Sheriff’s Office this year.
