Investigative Services conducts professional investigations for the purpose of solving crimes and promoting public order within several specialized areas including immediate response with manpower or component services to assist our local, state and federal partners. Assigned on-call agents within every section ensure an appropriate and timely response to customer requests for services at any hour of any day. The departments and units that comprise Investigative Services are separated into functional areas in order to provide specialized services.
The four Regional Investigative Units conduct field investigations of crimes. The four Regional Units are: Low Country, Midlands, Pee Dee and Piedmont Regions.

The Behavioral Science Unit provides psychological profiling and threat assessments.
The State Grand Jury investigates public corruption, securities fraud, and insurance fraud.
The SLED Polygraph Unit exists in order to support the investigative needs of local, state, and federal criminal justice agencies through the use of state-of-the-art equipment and time-tested polygraph examination techniques in order to determine the truthfulness or attempted deception of criminal suspects and witnesses. The Polygraph Unit also conducts pre-employment and criminal polygraph examinations. The SLED Polygraph Unit consists of three headquarters examiners.
The Polygraph Unit also regulates polygraph licensure for government examiners and private examiners for the State of South Carolina. The Polygraph Unit assists government polygraph examiners by providing internships and training to elevate the expertise of these examiners to the highest level possible.
The Polygraph Unit only provides polygraph exams at the request of government agencies.
Special Victims Unit (SVU) investigates deaths of children where the death is suspicious, unexpected, or unexplained; and investigates vulnerable adult abuse, neglect, exploitation and fatalities.
The Victim Services Unit is included within the Special Victims Unit and supports victims of violent crime throughout the SLED investigative process.
The Vulnerable Adult Hotline is operated 24/7 and is for reporting incidents and fatalities that occur in facilities operated or contracted for operation by DMH or DDSN: 1-866-200-6066
The Forensic Art Unit is also included within the Special Victims Unit and prepares court exhibits, sketches composites, conducts computer aging, and provides skull reconstruction.
The Training Unit conducts, develops or facilitates training for Division employees, required annual training, complex analysis of incidents, advanced training, in addition to maintaining and monitoring training costs, hours, and certifications for all personnel as required.
The Vehicle Crimes Unit consists of Agents in various locations covering the entire state. Common investigations in this unit consist of DMV fraud (license fraud, title fraud), car dealership violations, chop shops, vehicle theft rings, examinations of burned/unidentifiable vehicles, and salvage yard violations/inspections.
